Charles F. Barron, 96, of North Platte died Thursday May 14, 2026 at Great Plains Health.
Charles was born May 18, 1929 in Trinidad, Colorado to Carlos and Conception Barron. He attended school in Hershey, Nebraska. He was drafted into the army in 1951 and was stationed in North Carolina and Georgia. He earned his GED while in the service. As a Private First Class he served as a cook, a clerk and a translator until he was honorably discharged in February of 1953. In 2025 he received the Quilt of Valor in North Platte, in recognition of his military service.
Charles married Antonia Barron on April 11, 1953 in Lexington, Nebraska at St. Ann’s Catholic Church.
He began work on the Union Pacific Railroad at age 19, working as a section man. After his army discharge, he returned to work on the railroad, as part of the section crew. He later moved into the yard and was promoted to section manager. He was an active member and representative of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Union. He retired as a track inspector from the Union Pacific in 1991 after 42 years of service.
In the thirty-four years after his retirement, he and Antonia enjoyed growing a large annual garden and volunteering their time at the area Catholic churches. Charles was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the GI Forum. They loved to dance and were often seen at North Platte events enjoying live music.
Charles is survived by his wife, Antonia Barron of North Platte; his children Catherine (David) Sullivan of Mullen; Bridget Barron of Omaha; Cosme (Dana) Barron of North Platte; Cecilia (Robert) McCullough of Lincoln; grandchildren Patrick Sullivan (Melissa), Alana Sullivan, Carlos Barron (Ashley), Makaela (Mark) Lauderdale, Lauren (Max) Zitek, Kayla (Justin) Brei, and Kirby (Cody) Jensen; great-grandchildren Calvin Sullivan, Kaylen and Carter Wolfert, Mateo and Miguel Barron, Nico, Finn & Alex Lauderdale and Taylor, Zoey, Zachary and Brady Jensen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Raymond Barron, and his sisters; Margaret Vizcaino, Emily Flores and Jennie Ortiz; and his son-in-law Jerry Kenny.
Visitation will be at Carpenter Memorial Chapel on Friday, May 22 from 12:00 – 7:00 pm. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. On Saturday May 23 the Rosary will be at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church at 10:30 am, followed by Mass at 11:00 am. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in memory of Charles Felix Barron.
