Dennis R. McCaslin, a dedicated and cherished member of the North Platte community, passed away on June 4, 2026, at Great Plains Health in North Platte, Nebraska. Born on April 7, 1953, in Grand Island, NE, to Richard and Lorna (Cruise) McCaslin, Dennis’s life was marked by steadfast commitment, warmth, and a vibrant personality that touched many.
Dennis graduated from Grand Island High School in 1972 and began a remarkable career with the Union Pacific Railroad, serving as a conductor for just under 40 years before retiring in 2013. In February 1977, Dennis married Judy Palmer, welcoming a stepdaughter, Sally, into his life. The bond Dennis shared with Sally remained special throughout the years. Later, on January 16, 1988, he married Karri Harnish in North Platte. Together, they had three children: Susan, Abby, and Alec. Though Dennis and Karri eventually divorced, the family connection remained meaningful.
Known for his confident and stubborn nature when it came to his opinions, Dennis was also undeniably social, fun, and friendly. Many remember him as a great and loyal friend, someone who valued relationships deeply and brought joy and companionship into the lives of those around him.
Dennis had a rich array of interests and hobbies that showcased his vibrant spirit. In his younger days, he loved scuba diving and embraced his love of nature through traveling and motorcycle riding. A collector of guns and an aficionado of music, particularly 60s and 70s classic rock, Dennis also cherished following sports, especially cheering for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Colorado Rockies. These passions offered him joy and a sense of community throughout his life.
Above all else, Dennis's proudest accomplishments were his grandchildren. He took immense pleasure in attending their games and activities, always proudly supporting and encouraging them. His grandchildren, Owen Armstrong, Stella Caudillo, and Briar Caudillo, stand as a testament to his loving legacy.
Dennis is survived by his children, Susan (Derek) Caudillo, Abby (Ben) McCaslin, and Alec McCaslin, all of North Platte. He also leaves behind his brother, Patrick (Tina) McCaslin of Mack, CO; his beloved grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many other family members who will carry forward his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Michael McCaslin, and his sister Kathy McCaslin.
