Shepherd
May 17, 1931 – August 29, 2023
Eunice M. Shepherd, 92, resident of North Platte, NE passed away on Tuesday,
August 29, 2023, at her niece's home in Gothenburg, NE.
Eunice was born on May 17, 1931, in Oconto, NE to Gerald Earl Horn and Velma
Hazel (Garringer) Horn.
She attended school in Lexington, NE and graduated from Lexington High School.
On June 12, 1950, she married Ivan Shepherd in Lexington, NE. To this union two
children were born, Greg and Sally. They lived and raised their family in the
Arnold area. Eunice worked as a bookkeeper at her husband Ike's Standard
Service Station in Arnold. Eunice also worked at the school, grocery store,
hardware store and did some waitressing. She also participated in the
championship bowling league in Arnold. In 2002, following their retirement
Eunice and Ike moved to North Platte, NE. They worked together as camp hosts at
several National Parks.
Eunice was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, D.A.V. Auxiliary, and the
Handy Anns Extension Club. She was an active volunteer with the MOPS program,
Golden Spike Tower, North Platte Senior Center, and the RSVP group. Eunice
volunteered over 16 years and 5 months with lifetime hours of 7,878. She
volunteered as recently as April of 2023, only taking off from volunteering when
she was having health issues. Eunice loved meeting new people through her
volunteer work. She enjoyed latch hook, gardening, yardwork, listening to all
kinds of music, walking, traveling, and was an avid reader. Eunice will be missed
by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Gregory Ivan Shepherd of Minden;
grandchildren, Victoria Shepherd, Robin Shepherd, and Samantha (Jason)
Hopkinson; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister,
Wanda Howell of Cozad; brother, Gary (Kathy) Horn of Elwood; sisters-in-law,
Shirley Stombaugh and Karen Horn both of Kearney; and many nieces, nephews,
family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ivan Shepherd, daughter Sally
Perry, and by brothers: Glenn (Betty) Horn, Dwight Horn, Clifton Horn, and Ronald
(Jean) Horn; sisters: Beverly (Dee) Stark and Phyllis (Eldred) Shepherd; brothers-in-law: Vernon Shepherd, and Ronald Howell; sisters-in-law: Mable (Merle) Hicks,
and Velma (Charles) Garringer.
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at 12:30 p.m. on
Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church in North Platte with Rev.
John Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Fort McPherson National
Veterans Cemetery, near Maxwell. Memorial book signing will be from 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20th at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which has
been entrusted with the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the RSVP group of North Platte or to the Wounded
