IN LOVING MEMORY OF
H. Jeanette
Phelps
August 17, 1938 – January 15, 2026
Jeanette Phelps passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, with her eldest son (Gerry) by her side in North Platte, Nebraska, at the age of 87. She was born to John and Melvina (Gibson) Fletcher in North Platte. Jeanette grew up working on the family farm while attending Echo and Community Center Country Schools east of Wellfleet, Nebraska. She moved to Curtis, Nebraska to attend high school and lived in the dorms while working in the kitchen.
Graduating in 1956, her first job was working as a Bank Teller in North Platte. Jeanette met Garry through their sisters, Luana and Carolyn, who were roommates in North Platte. Their first date was a dance in Wallace, Nebraska. They were married on August 6, 1960 at St William's Church in Wellfleet. The young couple started their life together in Wallace where they had four sons. Tragically their third son, Claude Allen, died of influenza just prior to his first birthday.
The couple started the Phelps Market in Wallace, with the help of many extended family members. Gerry and Barry spent their time in the basement of the store creating many adventures. After deciding to sell the market, Jeanette started a daycare with Patrick still at home. When Patrick was old enough to start school, she returned to banking as a Teller at the Farmer's State Bank of Wallace. Over the years she moved up to Lead Teller, Assistant Cashier and acquired many certifications in banking. Jeanette remained with the bank until her retirement.
Jeanette was an active member of the Wallace Community Club the entire time she lived in Wallace, serving as an officer many times. The kids all recall her making large roasters of baked beans every year for the Wallace Fall Festival. Both Garry and she held CPR certification to serve
the rural community if ever needed. After the passing of Garry in 2015, Jeanette moved to North Platte, where she lived out her remaining years. Many friends and family of Jeanette remember her fondly for her kind-hearted nature, infectious laughter, spirit of generosity, and a willingness to help out whenever asked. Jeanette's faith was very important to her. She attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wallace and as a Member of the St. Mary's Altar Society she helped with many of the Church's events.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her husband, Garry Phelps, infant son, Claude Allen Phelps; parents, John and Melvina (Gibson) Fletcher; in-laws, Flotow and Ruby (Royse) Phelps; siblings, Robert Allen and Carolyn DeMilt (Fletcher); sister-in-law, Marita Lundvall (Phelps) and husband, Dean Lundvall.
Her memory is carried forward by her three surviving sons and their families: Gerry (Diana) of North Platte, NE, Barry (Blake) of Colorado Springs, CO and Patrick (Sharen) of Staplehurst, NE. She was the cherished "Grandma Jet" to her many grandchildren: Daniel Phelps (Lannae),
Brent Phelps (Jessica), Andrew Olesen-Phelps, Bryan Olesen-Phelps, Carolyn Phelps, Jeffrey Phelps (Chelsea), Seth Saf (Ashley), Michael Dietz, Juliann Phelps and Kaleb Dietz. Her love reached even further to her great-grandchildren: Matthew, Olivia, Oliver (Daniel), Grace, Isabel
(Brent), Scarlett Elaine (Carolyn), Kade, Fadelynn, Finnley (Seth) and Harper (Kaleb). She was the proud great-great grandmother of Scarlett Ann (Mathew). She is also survived by siblings, Mary (Wes) Fiddleke of Kearney, NE, Jerome (Sandie) Fletcher of Green River, WY, Cornelia (Pat) Sullivan of Omaha, NE; brother-in-law, Darrel (Peggy) Phelps of Grand Junction, CO; and sister-in-law, Luana (Don) Cross of Munds Park, AZ.
Jeanette will be greatly missed by her family, friends and neighbors who were fortunate to have known her. Her laughter and kindness will remain a cherished memory to all.
