John Winchell, 74, of North Platte, passed away September 12, 2026 at his home. John was born October 24, 1952, in Julesburg, Colorado, the third child of Robert and Barbara Winchell. He began his career in the Union Pacific Railroad Diesel Shop, but later transitioned to the Peer Support and Red Block program, finding his true passion in helping others until he retired.

On July 2, 1972, John married Gayle Terry. John enjoyed spending time with Gayle, watching her garden and make her crafts, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Barbara Winchell, his sister Linda Fairchild, and brother Dan Winchell

He is survived by his wife Gayle, son John (Sarah) Winchell of North Platte Nebraska; daughter Jamie (Carlos) Streit of North Platte Nebraska; brother Dean (Tina) of Harvard, Nebraska; 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and many very special nieces, nephews, cousins; and special family friend, Sara Zogg.

Services will be 2:00 pm Sunday, September 20, 2026 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, with private family internment at a later date. A celebration of life will be held 3:30 - 5:30 on the 3rd floor of NebraskaLand Bank, located at 1400 S Dewey Street. Cremation was chosen.
