Melvin Dean Marchant, 77, of North Platte, died September 2, 2012 at the Sutherland Care Center. He was born Nov. 3, 1934 to Arron and Zola (Bennett) Marchant at Bayard, Iowa. Melvin attended Bayard Grade School in Bayard, Iowa and graduated from Gutherie Center Iowa High School. After graduation, he worked for area farmers and drove a truck for Big John Campbell. He then went to work for Crawford Electric where he worked for 33 years. After Crawford discontinued business, he worked another 6 years for various US Companies from Kentucky to the Western slope and from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. After quitting high line work, he went to work for North Platte Cattle Feeders for the next 12 years, retiring in December 2002. He was better known as ""Sam"". He is survived by his sisters, L. Bell Marchant of Pleasant Hill, IA., Thelma Lee of Seward, NE., Betty Wood of Taopi, MN. and sister-in-law Mildred Marchant of Panora, IA., many nieces and nephews. Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Donna; sisters, Marie Kinnick, Zelda Monroe, Cleta Marchant, Jenith Marchant, and brothers, Rex Marchant and Lindsay Marchant.
