Thomas Lawrence Atencio passed away on September 9, 2026, in North Platte, Nebraska. He was born on July 22, 1950, in Longmont, Colorado, to Leo and Louise (Cabrales).

Thomas joined the Army at 19, when he completed his service in the Army he then enlisted in the Marines. While in the service he was awarded and very proud of the medals of accommodation he received. Those medals included: The Combat infantry badge, Bronze Star, Air Medal for meritorious achievement, Sharp Shooter, and Pistil Marksman

Thomas will be remembered with love by his family and friends. He is survived by his son, Thomas Atencio and his wife, Amanda, and by his daughter, Tammy Atencio. He also leaves behind a large and cherished group of grandsons: David and Daytona, Teylon, Thomas , Thomas  and Talea, Alexander, Charles, Nathaniel, Tayvian, Taecyn, and Tryston. His memory will also live on in his great-grandsons, Thomas III  and Grayson.

He is also survived by his sister, Betty Martinez, and by Theresa Denton, his roommate and friend. In addition, he leaves multiple cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family who will carry his memory forward.

Thomas was preceded in death by his mother; his sisters, Linda, Joann, Jane, Rosie, and Vickie; and his brothers, Leo and Tim.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Thomas during visitation on September 11, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, 1616 W B St, North Platte, Nebraska. A memorial service will be held on September 12, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., also at Carpenter Memorial Chapel.
