Obituary

Vicki Lizabeth Markey, 71, of Hershey, passed away on January 10, 2019, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center after a long fight with cancer. Vicki was born June 8, 1947 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Lawrence and Elsie (Petersen) Spratt. She was the oldest of eleven children.

She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1965. After graduation she worked at Pendleton Woolen Mills. She married George L. Markey August 18, 1967. They relocated to North Platte in 1972 for George's job on the Union Pacific Railroad, where their three children were born. They then moved to Hershey in 1977.

Vicki was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a true homemaker and was an exceptional chef.  She was never afraid to attempt a new recipe or put her own twist on it.  Her specialty dish was making turkey and noodles from scratch.  During the holidays we could all look forward to her cookies, candies, breads and special treats.  She always made time to craft with the grandchildren making hand-turkeys, paper chains, cut out dolls, ladybug rocks and anything else they could dream up. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Vicki loved to cook and craft but especially sew. Over the years she sewed and fitted many prom and wedding dresses taking pride in making each girl feel special. She was a perfectionist and no detail was too small.  She enjoyed sewing for the community and was always hemming, fitting or reconstructing something. She donated her services to the community by working on school uniforms and teaching 4-H sewing for many years.

They spent time in Council Bluffs at the casinos and visiting family every chance they got. She loved life and found beauty in everything. She was a kind and warm-hearted person who brought smiles and laughter to everyone she met. She had a beautiful soul and will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Elsie (Petersen); father and mother in laws Louis and Hilda (Shamblen) Markey; Special Dad Theo Ackerman.

She leaves behind her husband of 51 years, George, of Hershey; Special Mom Flora Ackerman of Council Bluffs, Son Leslie (Kortney) Markey of North Platte, daughter Nicole (John) Folchert of Sutherland, and son Douglas Markey of North Platte, and 10 siblings, 4 special siblings and numerous nieces and nephews. Grandchildren: Caitlin Murtaugh, Malachi Murtaugh, Ashlie (Terrance) Nelson, Kennedy (Malarie) Marrufo, Kelsey Folchert, Christian Folchert, Alexis Markey, Antonia Markey, Allee Markey and numerous special Grandchildren.
